Six Words That Get Used Loosely, and What They Mean on This Bench

This page exists because a fitting conversation goes badly when one person is using vocabulary the other has only ever read on a website. Nothing here is proprietary. Read it before a session or ignore it entirely, and we will explain it again out loud.

01 — weight

The number that changes the most and gets discussed the least

Shaft weight is the single specification with the largest effect on how a club feels and on where the club ends up in the swing. It also has the largest effect on swing weight, which means a weight change never travels alone: drop thirty grams out of an iron shaft and you have altered the head-to-grip balance of the club whether or not that was the intention.

Marketing has pushed lighter for two decades and it is not universally wrong. It is wrong often enough that we start every iron conversation by asking where your current set sits, because a golfer who has been comfortable at 120 grams for eight years is rarely improved by 95.

Bands are for talking, not for fitting. Two shafts at the same published weight can produce different swing weights once they go to your length, and that difference is what actually reaches your hands.

02 — flex and frequency

Letters are branding. Cycles are a measurement.

There is no standards body defining what S means. One manufacturer's stiff is another's regular, and within a single model the tolerance from shaft to shaft is wider than most golfers would guess. That is why the analyser at the back of the room matters: it clamps the butt, plucks the shaft, and reads the oscillation in cycles per minute.

Frequency is not a better flex letter, it is a repeatable number. It lets us match a set so that the progression from long iron to wedge climbs smoothly instead of stepping around wherever the production run happened to land, and it lets us tell you honestly that the replacement six iron you had built elsewhere is eight cycles softer than its neighbours.

A golfer never feels a flex letter. They feel a club that does not match the one either side of it.

What we do with it: on a set build we frequency every shaft before assembly and order the progression. On a single club we read the incoming club first so the replacement has something to be compared against. Both readings go on your sheet.

03 — torque

Twist, and why the published figure is only half the story

Torque describes how much a shaft twists around its own axis under load, published in degrees. Lower numbers twist less. Graphite publishes it, steel largely does not bother because steel torque values sit in a narrow band anyway.

The trap is that torque is measured differently between houses and is heavily influenced by weight. A light shaft with a low published torque is not the same animal as a heavy one with the same figure. We treat it as a tiebreaker between two shafts that already tested similarly, not as a specification to chase, and we say that during sessions when somebody arrives asking for a specific number.

Where it genuinely matters: golfers who miss off the toe and heel in roughly equal measure, and anybody whose transition loads the club hard enough that a high-torque shaft arrives late and open.

04 — bend profile

Where along the shaft the flexing happens

Two shafts can measure identically at the butt and behave nothing alike, because the stiffness is distributed differently along the length. The industry shorthand for this is low, mid, or high launch, which is a description of the outcome rather than the mechanism.

  • Tip section. The part nearest the head. A softer tip lets the head release through impact and generally adds launch and spin; a stiffer tip holds it back.
  • Mid section. Governs a good deal of what a golfer calls feel. This is where a smooth-tempo player and a hitter usually disagree most about the same shaft.
  • Butt section. Drives the frequency reading and how the club loads at the top of the swing rather than through the strike.

We do not own a machine that maps stiffness along the shaft, and we will not pretend to. What we have is the manufacturer's published profile, the frequency reading, and your numbers off the monitor with one variable changed at a time. That combination is usually enough to find the answer, and where it is not, we say the honest thing: the difference is inside the noise.

05 — trim

The same shaft is several shafts depending on how it was cut

Almost every shaft arrives longer than it needs to be and gets cut at both ends. Removing material from the tip stiffens the section closest to the head; removing it from the butt raises the frequency overall. Manufacturers publish trim charts, and the charts are correct for the assumption they were written under, which is that the club is going to standard length.

The moment your build is half an inch over or under standard, the chart becomes a starting point that somebody has to think about. This is where a shaft installed by a bench that reads the chart and a shaft installed by a bench that also reads a frequency meter stop being the same club.

What goes on your sheet

  • Raw shaft length as received, and the tip trim taken
  • Finished length, measured to our stated method so a future build can match it
  • Frequency after assembly, with grip on
  • Swing weight after assembly, and any tip weight or counterweight used to get there

Any competent builder can reproduce a club from those four lines. That is the point of writing them down, and it holds true even if you never come back here again.

06 — balance point

Where the mass sits along the length

Two shafts of identical weight can carry that weight in different places. A shaft with mass biased toward the butt produces a lighter-feeling head at the same swing weight; a tip-biased one does the reverse. Golfers describe this as a club feeling heavy or dead without being able to point at a specification, because the specification they are looking at is weight and weight is not the variable doing the work.

Counterweighting is the lever here, and it is a genuinely useful one for golfers who want a heavier total club without the head feeling like it is dragging. It is also easy to overdo, and an overdone counterweight produces a club that feels lovely at address and arrives late.

What none of this tells you

Every term on this page describes the club. None of them describes what your hands and your sequence do with it, and that is the half that decides the outcome. A shaft that suits your measured tempo on a Tuesday morning may not suit the swing you make on the eighteenth tee with a match on the line.

This is why we test against your existing club as a control and change one thing at a time, and why we will tell you when a difference is smaller than your own shot-to-shot spread. Vocabulary is useful. It is not a substitute for hitting the thing.
