Irons Are Where the Bench Earns Its Keep
You carry seven or eight of them, they are the clubs that decide most of your score, and they are the only part of the bag where the specifications drift measurably from one season to the next. Every part of how this studio is organised comes back to that fact.
A driver is a purchase. A set of irons is a relationship with a bench.
Lie angle
The specification with the biggest effect and the shortest memory
Lie angle decides where the sole meets the ground and therefore where the face points at the moment it matters. A degree in the wrong direction on a scoring iron moves the face enough to matter at a hundred and forty yards, and unlike almost everything else on a golf club, lie angle changes on its own. Turf does it. Mats do it faster. Being in a bag that gets thrown in a trunk does a little of it too.
We read it two ways in every session. The machine gives the static number, and the lie board gives the delivered one, and the interesting information is in the disagreement between them. A club built two degrees upright that still leaves a heel-side mark is telling us something a static reading alone never would.

Those are our numbers off our own bench, not an industry figure, and the word to notice is uneven. Drift that moved the whole set equally would at least be consistent. What actually happens is that three clubs move and the rest do not, which produces a set that behaves differently at the top and bottom for no reason the golfer can name.
Length and lie together
Neither number means anything without the other
Adding half an inch to a club effectively flattens how it presents at address, and shortening does the reverse. This is why a fitting that hands you a static chart based on wrist-to-floor is starting from a proxy rather than a measurement. Height and arm length tell us where to begin. The board tells us where to end.
Length also travels with swing weight, so a length change is never one change. Add an inch and the head feels heavier unless something is done about it; that something is either a lighter shaft, less tip weight, or a counterweight, and each of those has its own consequence. This is the sort of chain we mean when we say one variable at a time is slower.
Shafts across a set
Matched is not the same as identical
A set of irons should climb in frequency as the clubs get shorter, and the climb should be smooth. What we routinely find in sets bought off a rack is a progression with a step in it — two clubs that measure closer together than their neighbours, or one that sits distinctly softer.
None of this is a manufacturing scandal. Shafts come off a line inside a tolerance and the tolerance is wider than the difference a good golfer can feel. Our job is simply to read them before they go in and order them so the set climbs cleanly, which costs bench time and nothing else.
- Steel and composite both get read. A composite iron shaft is not exempt from having a tolerance.
- Replacement clubs get read against the set. A six iron bought two years after the rest is the most common source of a step.
- The readings go on your sheet. So a future replacement can be matched rather than guessed at, by us or by anybody else.
Gapping
Strong lofts moved the problem rather than solving it
Iron lofts have been getting stronger for twenty years, and the number stamped on the sole stopped being a description of the club some time ago. It does not matter much in isolation. It matters enormously at the bottom of the set, where a pitching wedge that is now effectively a nine iron leaves a hole between it and a sand wedge that nobody adjusted.
We measure delivered carry rather than reading lofts, because the loft on the sole is not what the ball responds to. Where the gap has opened, the answer is usually one additional wedge and a bend, not a new set. That is a two hundred dollar conversation and it comes up in most baseline sessions.
Cast or forged
Forged bends more predictably and moves more readily in play. Cast holds its number longer and is less forgiving to bend. Neither is better. One implies a shorter recheck window than the other and we set yours accordingly.
Mixed sets
Cast long irons and forged scoring clubs is a sensible build and we do a fair number. It takes more matching work at the bench. We charge the same.
Combo with hybrids
Where the long irons stop working, they stop working. We test the crossover point rather than assuming it lands at the four iron for everybody, and it frequently does not.
Grip size across the set
Recorded per hand in tape wraps, not as a size name. Size names are not consistent between makers and a regrip elsewhere can quietly change your build.
The service half nobody sells
An iron fitting that ends when the clubs are collected is an incomplete product. The bend check is the other half, it costs sixty-five dollars for file holders, it takes under an hour, and for a golfer playing sixty rounds a year on firm Valley turf it is the single highest-value thing we do.
If you only ever buy one thing from this bench, we would rather it was that than a set of irons.
