What Six Years of Bend Checks Look Like When Somebody Writes Them Down

Since 2019 every set that has come back to this bench for a scheduled recheck has been re-gauged against the readings we took the first time. That is not research. It is bookkeeping. But bookkeeping done consistently for long enough starts to have a shape, and I have been asked enough times what the shape is that it seemed worth publishing.

What is in the pile, and what is not

The figures below come from sets belonging to golfers who opened a file with us, came back at least once when their window came up, and let us put the whole set on the machine both times. That is a specific population and it is worth naming its biases before quoting any of it.

  • These golfers are self-selected for caring about equipment. They are probably not typical.
  • They are all playing courses in the Sacramento region, on turf that runs firm for a third of the year. A Pacific Northwest bench would find something different.
  • Sets that never came back are invisible to this data. If drift correlates with never returning, I would not know.
  • Everything was read on one machine, calibrated Mondays, by four people using the same procedure. Internally consistent, externally unverified.

None of that makes the numbers useless. It makes them ours rather than universal, and that distinction is the whole reason this page exists rather than a citation to somebody else's study.

The headline number

Across all returning sets, the median lie change on a golfer playing roughly sixty rounds a year is about a degree and a half over one season, concentrated in the clubs from the eight iron down. Median means half of those sets moved more than that, which is the part people skip past when we say it out loud in the room.

The pattern is unsurprising once you look at it. The scoring clubs meet the ground hardest and most often, and forged carbon steel gives more readily than cast. What was less expected was how consistently the movement runs toward flat. I had assumed a fair number of sets would drift upright from bag storage and mishandling. Very few do.

Drift is not the problem. Uneven drift is the problem. A set that moved together would at least still be a set.

The finding that actually matters

If every club in a set moved one degree flat, the golfer would adapt and nobody would notice much. What we see instead is three or four clubs moving while their neighbours hold, which produces a set with a step in it. The golfer then has one club that behaves differently from the two either side of it, and since equipment is the last place most people look, they spend a season trying to fix it in the swing.

In our files the eight iron is the single most likely club to be the odd one out, followed by the pitching wedge. I do not have a satisfying explanation for the eight iron specifically. It may simply be the club that sits at the crossover between full swings and controlled ones for a lot of golfers.

Two things in the data I did not expect

Practice surface beat round count. When I split the files by rounds played, the correlation with drift was weaker than when I split them by where the golfer practises. Heavy mat users showed more movement than grass-only players who logged forty percent more rounds. This is the finding that changed how we set recheck windows, and it is why the intake asks about practice surface before it asks about anything else.

Prior bending predicts future bending. Clubs that had been bent once moved again sooner than clubs that had never been touched. That could mean the bend introduced something, or it could simply mean those clubs were being used in the way that caused the first movement. I cannot separate the two with what I have, and I mention it because the honest version of a dataset includes the questions it cannot answer.

The uncomfortable part

About one set in nine came back with a reading that did not match what we had written down, in a way that drift does not explain — a club two degrees from where our own sheet said we had built it, with no plausible path from one to the other. Some of those are golfers having work done elsewhere in between and not mentioning it, which is entirely their right. Some of them are us.

That is the reason every line in a file is initialled and the reason the machine is calibrated and logged weekly. It is also the reason I am publishing the number rather than the round one: a bench that claims never to have made a bad reading is either not measuring often enough or not checking.

What to do with this

If you play under twenty rounds a year on grass, none of this is urgent. If you play sixty-plus, practise on mats through the winter, and play forged scoring clubs, your set has almost certainly moved since the last time anybody looked, and you will not have noticed because nothing about this announces itself.

A bend check takes under an hour, costs sixty-five dollars once you have a file, and either finds something or does not. Both outcomes are worth knowing. The set that comes back clean gets a longer window next time, which is a saving rather than a sale.
